Does High Wireless Speaker Power Efficiency Imply Great Cost?

By Michelle Jaeger

Let me have a look at the term "power efficiency" which shows you exactly how much wireless loudspeakers waste so that you can pick a set of cordless speakers.

Given that low-efficiency wireless speakers are going to provide merely a small fraction of the power consumed by the amplifier as useful audio energy, the amplifier requires a bigger power supply than high-efficiency types resulting in more expensive. An elevated amount of heat leads to further stress on elements. The lifespan of the cordless loudspeakers could be decreased and dependability can be compromised. High-efficiency wireless speakers on the other hand do not suffer from these issues and can be constructed really small.

Low-efficiency models consume more overall energy in order to create the same amount of audio power as high-efficiency models. Consequently they require a larger power source which makes the wireless speakers more expensive to build. Further, the thermal stress on the circuit board elements and amp materials is a lot more serious and may even reduce the reliability.

However, there are a few things to notice about efficiency. Firstly, this value will depend on on the amount of power that the amp is delivering. Every music amp is going to consume a certain level of energy regardless of whether or not it supplies any power to the loudspeaker. That is why the smaller the power the amp delivers, the lower the power efficiency. For this reason audio suppliers generally specify the efficiency for the highest audio power that the amp can deliver.

Please note, though, that efficiency depends on how much energy the amp delivers at a given moment. Amplifiers possess higher efficiency while providing higher output power than when working at low power because of the fixed energy that they use up irrespective of the output power. The efficiency figure in the amp data sheet is typically given for the highest amp output power. To figure out the power efficiency, the audio power that is consumed by a power resistor which is connected to the amplifier is divided by the total energy the amplifier consumes while being fed a constant sine wave signal. Commonly a complete power profile is plotted in order to show the dependency of the efficiency on the output power. This is why the output power is swept through several values. The power efficiency at each value is calculated and a efficiency graph generated.

Although switching (Class-D) amps possess amongst the highest efficiency, they have a tendency to possess higher sound distortion than analog audio amps and lower signal-to-noise ratio. For that reason you will have to weigh the dimensions of the cordless loudspeakers against the sound fidelity. However, the newest cordless speakers that use switching-mode audio amps, similar to Class-T amplifiers, offer audio fidelity that comes close to that of low-efficiency analog amplifiers and can be built ultra small and light.
