Back in the days, for people to communicate, they had to be at close proximity to pass the information across. At a distance, the channels of communication available included drum beating and some signals. The scope of information that would be sent was narrow. In the year 1792, a French scientist Claude Chappe designed a communication system which would transmit messages from one place to another. The system had two high towers that were located a distance of six miles away from each other. The operators would be located at the top of these towers. The operators would receive the message and transmit it to the next tower. The transmission was via semaphores. This system was only used up to 1880 when the telegraph system of communication was widely accepted as a powerful tool for communication.

Electrical wire based telegraphy was first implemented on a large scale in the year 1839 which replaced the previous electromagnetic telegraphy that was less efficient. The new system was designed and implemented by Sir William Fothergil Sir together with Charles Wheatstone.

The development of the communication system had taken a good start. In the 20th century, more convenient system of communication was invented. This was wireless communication which required no physical link between the sender and recipient of the information. This mode of communication was invented by Nobel Laureate Guglielmo Marconi using radio waves.

The present day communication system has evidently undergone a huge evolution to get to its current state. The present day system has reduced the world into a global village where communication is quick, efficient safe and cheap. This was made possible by the hard work and dedication of early days scientist who provided a basis for extensive research and further development of communication systems.
