Different Features Of CCG Games

By Nita McKinney

Collectible card games are played using playing cards that are specifically designed. CCG games combine strategic game-play with the appeal of collection. This game is also called trading card game or customizable card game. The very first collectible card game was Magic: The Gathering. It was greatly successful and this is what made the others to follow suit. There are thousands of games in this category.

Looking at their game-play, each collectible card game system has a given set of instructions which describe the objectives of the players and card categories to be used. The basic rules that govern interaction of cards are also described. Moreover, every card contains additional text that explains the effect of that card on the game. They also generally signify specific elements that are gotten from the genre, setting or source material of the particular game. There is illustration and naming of cards from these elements.

The game Magic: The Gathering for example was designed based on the genre of fantasy. As a result, the majority of cards made use of represent magical spells and creatures. The dragon in this game is depicted as reptile with beastly features and has the ability to fly. Its statistics during the game are formidable compared to other creatures.

Pace control of most CCGs is governed by resource systems designed for this purpose. Most of the time, it is the cards that form the deck of a given player that are considered as the resource. The frequency with which cards move from decks to either the player or the play area is very restricted. Relative card strength balancing is made achievable by the number of resources that are needed for playing the card.

The resources could be cards or may be represented by other means such as tokens in resource pools and symbols on cards among others. From the available pool of cards, a player should select cards that will compose his deck. This is unlike traditional games of cards where contents of the deck are limited and pre-determined.

By selecting cards, CCG players are in a position to customize their deck strategically in order to take advantage of favorable card interactions, statistics and combinations. Well, theoretically, the deck of a player could be of any size. However, the optimal size is approximately consistent of sixty cards. This is for purposes of playability, and sixty is thus the arbitrary standard size.

Physical CCG playing was the only possibility in the past. With technology however, internet play has become very common. People can play over the internet and through the use of LAN lines. This is possible through development of virtual collections that merely exist as sets of data that rely on central servers. Software programs enable people to play without relying on central databases. Both of these are purchased.

There are also online CCG games that run entirely free. This is done by either the card game creators or volunteer staff. At their most basic, they include several decks that are created for members to collect and trade. While internet play is also enjoyable, most people tend to enjoy physical play more due to the fact that it comes with more reality.
