What To Know About How To Scan

By Tamika Powell

There are several types of scanners that are used in modern times. This title is given to many devices and may refer to the radio, units that are used for medical procedures and tests, or the many items that are applied in computing for scanning printed images, objects, text and more. All of these devices are different, but there are some basic steps involved with how to scan.

In order to scan something to make a digital file that is on a computer, one must have a computer and an image scanner. These computing devices come in many different makes and models, some act as printers too. Most are available at home or electronic stores, but prices are expected to vary. In some cases, a special software may be needed with the device.

Both devices should be turned on to begin with. The scanner and the computer must be connected, by cables or wirelessly. Place the paper, image or object on the scanner and click the scan button, which may be on the device or the software program.

It is important to note that there are two key versions of scanners: flatbed and sheetfed. Flatbed types feature a lid that can be lifted and a glass plate where the objects are to be placed. This model allows for the scanning of fabric, leaves and other non-traditional items. Sheetfed models only permit what fits in the slot, usually only paper or photos.

Once the item has gone through, it will show up on the computer. Depending on programs used, computer or the device, there may be more options. Individuals may decide to crop out a portion of the scan, change the viewing settings or even rescan. After the necessary changes have been done, the next step is to save the item to the computer. Individuals may also want to print a copy, which is possible if the scanner includes a printer as well.

When in doubt, consult the manual that came with the device. This can help those who are struggling to get the unit to work correctly. Be aware that some things cannot be scanned through these means. Instead, an object may be better off photographed. In general, there is not much maintenance or upkeep associated with owning these devices. However, it is important that the glass plate be kept clean.

Scanning is a process done by many people, especially those looking to share documents, articles from newspapers or magazines, book pages, and photographs. The process should take no more than five minutes, but time will depend on what is transferred and via what devices. Most people opt to filter, resize, sharpen, despeckle, crop, or alter contrast, colors or brightness of scans.

Learning how to scan is easy. There are many different devices and software that are used when it comes to scanning for computers. Individuals should have a working computer and image scanner in order to complete this task. Usually the process takes only a few minutes and once the image is sent to the computer, individuals have the opportunity to adjust the settings of the digital file to their liking.
